7. Wrap-up: Pictogram

Transcript

In today’s project, you learned an important computer science concept, broadcasting, while you created an awesome photo-editing program!

Show off your Pictogram program to your friends and family, and encourage them to try it out with their own photos.

You can access Scratch on any computer with internet access.

Photo-sharing applications enable people to express their creativity.

People can share their own unique styles, creations, and experiences with their family, friends, and followers.

Computer scientists like you created the popular photo-sharing application, Instagram, which has over 150 million users!

Knowing how to code enables you to create programs which can be used by not only your friends, but potentially by millions of people around the world.

Now that's pretty awesome.

Computer scientists create much more than social media applications.

They make important impacts in many diverse fields, including medicine.

Check out this clip about a student who is using code to help fight cancer.

They are really going to take code to be able to answer because they are questions that have been around for ages.

I'm Brittany Wenger.

I'm 19 years old.

I'm a student at Duke University, and I'm working with code to help fight cancer.

When I was in tenth grade, my cousin was diagnosed with breast cancer, and I saw firsthand the experience this really has on a woman and her family, and I knew I wanted to get involved.

I wanted to detect patterns in these biopsies called fine needle aspirations.

The problem is, it's really difficult for doctors to diagnose these under a microscope, so they become wildly inconclusive, and most hospitals refuse to use them.

I really thought that, with code, there was a potential to detect even more subtle patterns than was initially detected under a microscope.

I was able to code a program using this data that makes breast cancer diagnostics quicker and less invasive for the women involved.

In your next club session, you will create an awesome quiz.

Your friends can take this quiz to find out which character they are in your favorite book, movie, or tv show.

During today's club, be sure to thank your Gurus and hosts!

They make this amazing CS First experience possible.
