In this activity, you created a cool extreme sports game in which a racer has to avoidobstacles. In this club, you’ve learned a lot of wayscomputers and computer scientists help athletes and coaches gain a competitive edge. That’sjust a start to what you can do with computers. Computer science is used in many fields tohelp people in different ways. Computer science is used in fashion to createclothing that responds to its surroundings. In medicine, computer science helps diagnosediseases, perform more accurate surgeries, and keep track of data. Computer scientistscreate cool animations and fun toys and video games that entertain people. Computer scienceis also used in politics to connect people and encourage communication and in environmentalconservation to keep track of endangered species and their habitats.
After this club, continue expanding your knowledge of computer science. Access Scratch from anycomputer with an internet connection, and find ways to learn more coding at cs-first.com/domore.
In addition, check if your school offers other computer science clubs or classes like “APCS,” “Exploring Computer Science,” or “Computer Science Principles.”
Many colleges offer majors in computer science as well.
Computer science majors often earn some of the highest salaries of any major.
Most computer scientists aren’t just motivated by the money, though. They like working withothers to solve problems and help people. While you’re waiting for your clubmatesto finish the wrap-up, take a moment to write a shout-out.
The sports world is full of people who show the same qualities you’re finding insideyourself to complete activities in this club. Stuart Scott, nicknamed Stu, was a famousSportsCenter anchor for ESPN. He was known for his tenacious hard work, dedication, innovation, and pushing his sports coverage to new heights in the face of criticism. When covering sports,Scott described athletes in unique and innovative ways, such as when he said “as cool as theother side of the pillow” and “just call him butter, because he’s on a roll.” Stuclimbed to the stage at the ESPYs in mid-2014 to deliver a powerful speech about his battlewith cancer and the importance of having courage and perseverance. He was, and continues tobe, a shining example of what can be accomplished in the face of challenges. You too will faceobstacles and difficulties in computer science and in life, but with hard work and a positiveattitude like Scott’s, you will overcome them and thrive.
