(dog barking)

In this screencast you will edit sounds in Scratch.

(sound effects)

Editing sounds is a valuable part of many careers in CS.

Go to the sounds tab in your project.

Select the sound from the library.

Record your own audio or upload a audio file from your computer that you would like to add to your project.

The screencast will use a sound from the library called drum machine, as an example.

Notice that this audio wave is pretty complex.

It has peaks, the high points and troughs, the low points.

Play it once to see what it sounds like.

(upbeat music)

This sound was about six seconds long.

In Scratch, you can make this sound shorter.

This comes in handy when a sound is too long for a given effect and you can shorten it to make it more impactful.

Highlight some of the audio clip, then delete the highlighted portion.

To do this hold down the mouse button and drag over the section that you wanna highlight.

Cool, next choose to shorten the section as you see in the example here.

Hit play to hear what it sounds like after you edit it.

(upbeat music)

Now have some fun by adding effects.

Select to see what else you can do with the sound.

Click reverse (backwards music)

That sounds great.

You can do this and many more things with audio files.

If you ever do something that you don't really like just hit undo.

(upbeat music)

If you wanna go back to the original clip, you can always add it again.

You are on your way to being an audio technician, a soundtrack editor, a film producer or even a computer scientist.

There are so many jobs that use skills like these and you're well on your way to learning them.

Now it's your turn.

Go to the sounds library.

Choose an audio clip.

And modify it by selection portions to edit or add effects to.
